More than a 101,000 strong crowd in Flemington witnessed history made as Michelle Payne (see cover page) rode the Prince of Penzance to the finish, despite the odds being 100-1, to claim the the 3,200m Melbourne Cup. Michelle is the first female jockey in 155 years to win the holy grail of Australian racing. The winners (owners, trainer, and jockey) receive a prize money worth $6.2 million, which is the third largest on offer in the world. The trophies are made of 18 carat gold: the largest one is worth $178,000, while two smaller ones for the trainer and jockey are worth $10,000 each.
