This natural marvel is located at the salt water lake at Westgate Park, 15 km from the Melbourne CBD. Rising temperatures in the summer leads to water evaporation. The salt concentration becomes more pronounced and reacts with the alga. The dunaliella salina, a single cell green alga, interacts with halobacteria cutirubrum, a harmless halobacterium to produce a striking red pigment. This occurrence takes place in only a handful of countries worldwide.

It usually occurs during the summer and then returns to ‘normal’ in the autumn. It is still pink though, and it’s already winter.

Driving out of Melbourne some years ago this lake was quite a shock
